Bae Samsik [12th]
<Sincerity-터 Sincerity-Ground> Exhibition View, YEMCA, 2024
Bae Samsik, born in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do, draws inspiration from the ancient Gaya civilization. His work centers on the motif of the square, expressing the historical depth and philosophical exploration of human civilization. The square transcends its geometric simplicity to symbolize a network of peace and positivity, while also delving into themes of national identity, nature, and the interconnectedness of life. Bae works with his canvas laid flat, treating it as a "site" of creation, layering various materials to imbue it with additional meaning.
His artworks form narratives that encompass time and history. The squares on his canvas resemble ancient relics, embodying the accumulated traces of time, with hidden remnants of forgotten histories lying beneath. Rather than focusing on concrete forms, his abstract compositions evoke profound potential meaning through depth and empty spaces. While exploring the traces of the past, Bae also conveys a sincere commitment and aspiration for the future. His work reflects a deep contemplation of the passage of time and the essence of human existence, offering viewers a meditation on both history and the enduring presence of life.
